Dr. Sandra Beck, section head of colorectal surgery at UK, is serving her first term as a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors. She was officially confirmed at a national meeting of the ACS in March 2019. Dr. Beck joins Dr. Cynthia Downard, a Pediatric Surgeon with Norton Healthcare and UofL Health, as the two surgeons appointed to represent the Kentucky Chapter of the ACS on the board.

An alumnus of the University of Kentucky General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency programs was honored by the American College of Surgeons with the International Surgical Volunteerism Award at the 2019 Clinical Congress in San Francisco.

Three endocrine surgeons from the University of Kentucky will be among the guest faculty at the 5th New York Masters Course in Comprehensive Endocrine Surgery this December. The UK Department of Surgery is partnering with the Department of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the medical education company, Cine-Med, to host this 2-day educational event.

In mid-October, Dr. Kant Y.K. Lin journeyed to the Henan province of China to share clinical information with colleagues in Plastic Surgery and discuss the process of board certification in the United States.

University of Kentucky third-year medical students praised the work of several dozen residents and fellows for demonstrating teaching excellence during the students鈥 first two surgery rotations. Those residents were given official recognition before their peers during surgery Grand Rounds early Wednesday morning as part of a new program for the 2019-20 academic year.

The cascade of new faculty members joining the UK Department of Surgery continues in October with the addition of two surgeons. One is taking on her first professional faculty appointment. The other is returning to the University of Kentucky to continue his surgical practice.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 30, 2019) 鈥 At just eight years old, Emily Marcinkowski already knew she wanted to be a doctor.

After an extensive and national search, the X站福利所 has named William Barlow (Barry) Inabnet, III, MD, chair of the department of surgery, effective Sept. 16.

As chair, Dr. Inabnet will promote the educational, clinical, and research activities of the department; collaborate across the college and university to continue interdisciplinary research, instructional programs, and institutional grants; and mentor and empower faculty and learners for success.

Dr. Emily Marcinkowski is the new Director of Surgery Advanced Development for fourth-year medical students. Her appointment by the UK X站福利所 Curriculum Committee became official this September.

She joins Dr. Cortney Lee as a co-director in the Department of Surgery's Medical School Education clerkships.

The special guest lecturer for the sixth annual Dr. Richard W. Schwartz Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium on Thursday, October 17 is Dr. Margaret Mary Griffen, a member of the Inova Medical Group and Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

The Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) awarded a University of Kentucky research team in the Division of Plastic Surgery a $10,000 pilot research grant in support of a breast cancer related study investigating a novel therapy for soft tissue repair after radiation treatment and breast reconstruction. The study is but one example of the ways in which Plastic Surgery is having a significant impact on cancer-related research in Kentucky.

When Nick Nolen went to his urologist for a routine follow-up appointment, he mentioned he had a pain in his side. A series of CT scans revealed an unwelcome sight 鈥 nodules on his lungs. Both his urologist and his primary care provider didn't think the nodules were cancer, so they advised him to come back in a few months for another scan.

Physicians and staff from UK HealthCare and the Lexington Surgery Center, along with Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, celebrated the opening of a new joint facility at 2115 Harrodsburg Road. The new Lexington Surgery Center is adjacent to UK HealthCare Turfland.
