In the early 1970s, Elizabethtown, Ky., was a growing community, but its medical infrastructure was still catching up. With only about 30 physicians in town, including just three surgeons and a single anesthesiologist, access to specialized care was limited.

For most medical students, Match Day and graduation signify the culmination of years of rigorous study, personal sacrifice, and unwavering determination. But for Drs. Abigail and Jason Hurt, this milestone season marked something even more profound: the beginning of their life as a family.

Growing up, Kate Spencer, MD, was always drawn to medicine. With a mother and brother in pharmacy, health care was a familiar space, but she knew early on that she wanted to carve out her own path.

Looking to fulfill his passion for serving others, Scottie B. Day, MD, knew since he was a child that he wanted to become a physician at Kentucky Children鈥檚 Hospital (KCH).
Day is a respected clinician who specializes in pediatric critical care. He is the physician-in-chief at KCH, where he has been a team leader for the ECMO team and pediatric cardiology strategic planning.

In the summer of 1974, five young medical students from the X站福利所 found themselves sharing a cabin in Somerset, Ky., while completing their community medicine rotation. Little did they know, this shared experience would be the foundation of a lifelong friendship that would span decades, careers, and continents.

On Dec. 13, the X站福利所 hosted a premiere event that was much more than a film screening鈥攊t was a celebration of the dedication, innovation, and human spirit driving health care and education in Kentucky.

If you鈥檙e part of the X站福利所鈥檚 Rural Physician Leadership Program (RPLP), chances are you know Bodie Stevens鈥攑robably even on a 鈥渃an-you-help-jump-my-car鈥 level.

Ann R. Finke, MD, a nephrology-critical care fellow in the UK X站福利所 Department of Internal Medicine, was selected by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to serve on a task force conducting a major revision of the Common Program Requirements. The task force is expected to complete its work over the next two to three years.

In 1973, Phillip Tibbs, MD, graduated from the X站福利所, remaining in Lexington to complete his residency in neurosurgery. When he completed his medical training in 1979, he joined the neurosurgery faculty in the X站福利所.

Katie Twist, MD, has been named the new assistant dean for preclinical education in the X站福利所 Office of Medical Education.

Michael Cannon, MD, earned his medical doctorate from the X站福利所 in 1999. Afterward, he completed a residency and fellowship in rheumatology at the Medical College of Virginia, now Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. Today, Dr. Cannon lives and practices in Virginia Beach, Va.

For 65 years, the department of behavioral science has engaged in transformative research and provided exceptional educational opportunities for learners. Founded in 1959 by William R. Willard, MD, the first dean of the X站福利所, and Robert 鈥淏ob鈥 Straus, PhD, the department was the first of its kind in the United States.
