Our mission is to educate physicians and scientists who will positively impact care for patients in the Commonwealth and beyond. Thanks to a variety of ongoing global health initiatives within the college, residents, and fellows are gaining invaluable experience in dozens of countries 鈥 helping thousands of patients while learning unique skills to enhance their practice of medicine.

The Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) recently held its 2024 Fall Meeting. The event included keynote speakers, a poster competition for medical students and residents, a doctor dilemma challenge, as well as networking opportunities. Students from our Lexington, Bowling Green, and Northern Kentucky campuses represented our college well.

Zena Chahine, MD, became a doctor because she wanted to help patients during their most vulnerable moments. When you get to provide care to someone who needs it, she said 鈥渋t鈥檚 a special kind of gratitude.鈥

Danielle Walsh, MD, professor of surgery, was recently selected as a new fellow of the International Surgical Society (ISS). Dr. Walsh was one of eight surgeons selected worldwide for this prestigious fellowship, and the only woman among this year鈥檚 inductees.

The GME Emerging Leaders program is designed to provide a leadership development opportunity to Chief Residents and Fellows in their important new leadership role. As part of the six-month program, a variety of personal and professional leadership topics are facilitated by UK HealthCare鈥檚 Enterprise Learning team, in coordination with other leaders across the enterprise.

A new project at the University of Kentucky will expand new avenues to develop community-engaged health equity research expertise among early-stage investigators. It鈥檚 called Achieving Success in Community-Engaged research to elimiNate Disparities (UK ASCEND).

Kaylee Gouge, MD, received her medical doctorate from the UK X站福利所 and is currently in her second year of combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency training, a four-year program that leads to certification in both specialties.

Darwin Conwell, MD, joined the University of Kentucky in April 2022 as a professor and the Jack M. Gill Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine. Since then, he鈥檚 become a recognizable fixture of the UK X站福利所 and UK HealthCare.

Lauren Bojarski, DO, joined the UK X站福利所 as a neurology resident in 2020, just as COVID-19 began to spread across the U.S. 

鈥淚 started my very first day learning how to gown up with personal protective equipment (PPE), which I was not expecting,鈥 said Dr. Bojarski. 鈥淏ut once I met my co-residents and the attendings, I felt more at ease.鈥

This month, the Office of Graduate Medical Education is celebrating its first class of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Certificate Program graduates. A small cohort of residents and fellows spent the past academic year growing in quality improvement and patient safety. They also conducted a QI capstone project and had the opportunity to present at a poster forum.

When John 鈥淛B鈥 Bradley was a young boy growing up in Beattyville, Ky., he dreamed of being a doctor. Inspired by his small town鈥檚 family physician, he imagined taking care of families just like his own one day.

Over the next few months, the UK X站福利所 will be releasing an exciting mini-documentary series called 鈥淏ecause We Care.鈥 Capturing interviews and conversations with people across our community, the four-part series explores who we are as a college and why our mission matters to all of us, whether we are learners, faculty, researchers, or staff.

Charles 鈥淐hipper鈥 Griffith鈥檚 workday uniform switched from scrubs to office wear when he graduated residency and joined the X站福利所 faculty in 1994. Shortly after, he began making a statement with loud, colorful ties.

Andrew Dunbar, a fourth-year medical student at the UK X站福利所-Lexington Campus, is looking forward to his future career in pediatrics. After Match Day this year, he is also looking forward to completing residency in the same city as his fianc茅, Alex Voelker, a fourth-year student at the college鈥檚 Northern Kentucky Campus.
